Books That Feature Kickass Ladies

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week’s theme is ‘books that feature _____’, so I filled in the blank with my favourite kickass female characters.

Growing up, there weren’t many books that featured strong female leads, at least not in the books I had access to in my small town on a small island. Gail Carson Levine definitely had some, Hermione was awesome, and there were a few others that I found in barely known books at the library. But you had to sift through a lot of kick butt boys and weak princesses and girls who were little more than victims. But recent trends, as well as diving into adult fiction has helped immensely with this, which is awesome, as someone who has never related in the slightest to the princesses who wanted to be saved.

So here are some of my favourites!

Obviously, right? Hermione was who I aspired to be when I was reading Harry Potter in elementary school, and made me feel like less of a weirdo for being such a nerd.

Specifically in the first two books, because I found she lost her awesome kick-butt-ness after that.

I adore Kara and her sass and her attitude and how she never takes shit from anyone. I really need to read the second book of this series.

Elle definitely had her moments of weakness in this book, but I loved the way she also relied on help from others in those moments, and used that to help her get back to business. Even kick-butt ladies need help sometimes.

Goodness, I loved this character. She was so awesome in this book and I need more of her.

I loved how hard Nessa worked, how she never gave up, or questioned her abilities in this book.

Lia is one of my all time favourite characters, up there next to Hermione. I love how she dove headfirst into things, did things the way she wanted, and didn’t let anyone make decisions about her life without her consent.

Being a senior citizen does not mean you have to stop kicking butt.

Another one who had her moments, but I love what she ended up doing every time she needed to act.

Mare gets on my nerves for being a pain throughout this series, but I adore Evangeline. Is she the nicest person? Not really. But she’s got a great head on her shoulders and knows how to get things done.

Who are some of your favourite kickass, female characters? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Definitely Diana in Wonder Woman: Warbringer ! She is just badass 💙 Tris and Katniss from Divergent and The Hunger Games are obvious choices, but I’d also pick Joanna from THG ! Mor and Feyre from ACOTAR, Mustang from Red Rising, Adelina from The Young Elites, Inej and Nina from Six of Crows, there are SO many 💙

    1. I haven’t read Wonder Woman: Warbringing, but I’m not surprised that Diana made your list! I hadn’t even thought of Tris or Katniss. And as for the rest of them, I guess I need to get around to those books, because I need more strong females!
